Christian Spirituality

Spirituality can be a confusing subject for many people—some are overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information out there, while others are misled by a lack of understanding. The complexities of spiritual practices can make it difficult to know what to believe or how to navigate the different paths.

I recently came across a woman who had read several spiritual books, ranging from mysticism to Christianity. Despite her exploration of various spiritual practices, she still believes that Christianity is the ultimate truth. However, there’s a catch. Out of what I would describe as spiritual greed, she continues to dabble in mysticism, using it to manifest wealth and success for herself. It’s not confusion—it's a matter of impatience and a desire for control.

In Christianity, we are taught to pray, have faith, and wait on God’s timing. God’s responses may not come immediately, but we trust in His wisdom and plan. But this woman, unwilling to exercise the patience required in her Christian walk, turns to mystical practices to attract material wealth. What strikes me as particularly troubling is that she and others like her often refer to the spirits they summon as “spirit guides.”

When I listened to her talk about her spiritual journey, I realized that she knew exactly what she was doing. She wanted to “have her cake and eat it too”—to reap the rewards of both worlds without embracing the sacrifices that come with true faith.

As 1 Timothy 4:1 (ESV) warns us:

"Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons."

Christianity, at its core, teaches patience, endurance, and the promise of eternity with God. For those who are still uncertain or skeptical about the spiritual realm, I empathize with them, as their lack of understanding leaves them vulnerable to deception. But for those who are aware of the existence of other realms, I urge caution. The only reliable guide through these realms is the Holy Spirit.

I’ve been deeply troubled by the growing number of interviews and testimonies from people who claim to have accessed spiritual realms through "spirit guides," which are clearly evil spirits. While these experiences may seem powerful, they are built on deception and pull people further away from the truth—that we are created to depend on God. However, these stories also serve as a reminder for me to pray more fervently and stay grounded in my refuge, which is in God alone.

This is a reminder for all of us to stay rooted in the truth of God’s Word, trusting that the Holy Spirit is the only safe guide in the spiritual journey.
