How to Create Your First VA Portfolio

Hearing the words “send your portfolio” can make many beginner VAs panic immediately.

Because now you are thinking: “What portfolio? I’ve never even worked with a client before.”

The good news is that your first portfolio does not need to be filled with paid client work. A lot of beginners think portfolios are only for experienced professionals, but that is not true at all.

Your portfolio is simply a way to show people what you can do.

Even if you do not have experience yet, you can still create sample work that demonstrates your skills. If you are interested in social media management, you can create sample Instagram posts in Canva. If you want to offer email management, you can create examples of professional email responses. If you are interested in organisation, you can create sample content calendars, spreadsheets, or task boards.

The goal is not to pretend you have years of experience. The goal is to show your potential.

Many beginner VAs overthink portfolios because they assume they need expensive websites or complicated designs. Honestly, a simple Canva portfolio or PDF document is enough when starting out. What matters most is clarity.

A client should quickly understand: who you are, what services you offer, and how you can help them.

Your portfolio can include a short introduction about yourself, the services you offer, tools you know how to use, and a few samples of your work. Even volunteer work, school projects, church activities, or personal projects can sometimes be included if they demonstrate useful skills.

And truthfully, your portfolio will grow with time.

As you gain experience, client testimonials, and real projects, you will continue improving it. Nobody starts with a perfect portfolio. Every experienced VA once had a very basic beginner portfolio too.

The important thing is not waiting until everything looks perfect before starting.
