How to Find Shelter in God

Let’s be honest—sometimes life throws things at us that don’t make any sense. You’re doing your best, trying to stay positive, but then a bad dream shakes you, or someone picks a fight with you out of nowhere. Or maybe you’ve noticed a strange pattern of setbacks, and you can’t quite explain why things keep going wrong.

The truth is, not every challenge we face is just “life happening.” Some of it is spiritual. Some of it is planned. And that’s why we need God more than ever—to shield us from the attacks we don’t see coming.

Psalm 64 really hits this point. In verse 3, it talks about enemies who “sharpen their tongues like swords and aim their bitter words like arrows.” That line stopped me in my tracks. It reminded me of that verse that says, “Every tongue that rises against you in judgment shall be condemned.”

Ever heard the saying, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me"? Yeah, that’s a lie. Words can hurt—badly.

Some people aren’t just talking trash—they’re speaking curses, releasing spiritual poison, or even setting traps with their words.

Words are powerful. They can cut deep—emotionally, mentally, and even spiritually. Some people don’t just speak carelessly; they speak with intention… to hurt, to curse, to damage. It’s not always physical attacks we should be looking out for—sometimes, it’s the silent ones.

Then there’s verse 5, where the enemies ask, “Who will ever notice?” That part really got me thinking. I believe the reason they’re so confident is because many of us Christians have become spiritually unaware. We get so caught up in life—work, drama, social media, chasing money—that we don’t even realize half our struggles are spiritual attacks. The enemy loves when we’re distracted because it means we won’t see his traps coming. But when we start paying attention? That’s when his plans start falling apart.

Verse 6 is another eye-opener. It says these enemies make “perfect plans.” Not random ones. Perfect. Carefully designed. It made me think of that scripture that says, “No weapon fashioned against you shall prosper.” Notice that word fashioned—it means the enemy doesn’t just throw anything your way. He studies you. He tailors the attack.

But here’s the good news. Verse 10 wraps it up with a beautiful promise: “The righteous will rejoice in the Lord and take refuge in Him.” That’s where our safety is. In God. Not in being strong, or smart, or always having it together—but in staying close to Him.

What to do?

This is your reminder to stay spiritually awake. Keep your heart aligned with God. Offer your life to Him daily. Don’t give the enemy room to sneak in unnoticed(avoid sin and ask for mercy immediately you do).

Because the truth is—only God can truly protect us from what we don’t see coming.
