Security vs Performance, What is your preference?

I had a chat with a friend who’s a product manager at a health tech company, and we both shared similar thoughts on this topic. I thought it would be nice to bring the discussion here.

From a product development point of view, security and performance are both very important, but which one comes first depends on the type of product and what users expect.

If a product handles sensitive user data like money, personal details, or medical records, then security should come first. Users need to trust the product. Even a small data breach can break that trust and cause serious damage. Think of fintech apps, health platforms, or e-commerce products, they must prioritize data protection, encryption, and compliance.

On the other hand, products like SaaS tools, productivity apps, or games should focus more on performance. People expect them to be fast, smooth, and reliable. A secure but slow app can easily lose users’ interest. So, things like speed, optimization, and scalability become the key focus.

In conclusion, I would say:

1. Security first for products handling sensitive data or transactions.

2. Performance first for products built for daily use, teamwork, or fun.

At the end of the day, great products find a balance, staying secure without slowing down, and staying fast without risking safety.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO FIND THE BALANCE.
